Meet Mario, a passionate car enthusiast who has been a vital part of our community. Mario's love for cars began in high school in Panama City, Panama, where he dreamed of owning a British Convertible sports car. Although the dream was placed on the back burner, Mario's journey with cars continued to develop throughout his life.

Where it started
In 1967, Mario had the opportunity to purchase a 1940 Chevy Coupe for fifty dollars, despite it lacking an engine or transmission. With limited knowledge about cars and mechanics at the time, he still acquired a 1951 Chrysler New Yorker with a 331 Hemi from the police pound. Mario successfully adapted the complete Chrysler running gear three months later and got the Coupe on the road. Over the next few years, he experimented with different transmissions, rear ends, and modifications with whatever parts he could obtain at the typical speed shop, which was the junk yard in those times.
Mario replaced the Hemi with a 250-cu-in engine, needing a more user-friendly vehicle with a 6-cylinder Chevy engine, and shipped the car to the US in 1978. The changes and improvements continued with a complete body-off restoration in 2005.

Living in the Midwest and needing a winter project, Mario purchased a 1967 Chevy C-10 pick-up rust bucket truck and completed a full body-off restoration in 2015.
Not one but two
With retirement on the horizon, Mario's dream of owning a British Convertible sports car became a reality. He solidified the dream by purchasing two 1972 MGBs—one for the Quad Cities and one for Arizona. His electrical engineering background has been invaluable in troubleshooting the Lucas circuits and maintaining both cars in working order.

The automotive craftsman
Over the years, Mario significantly enhanced his mechanical skills, dedicating countless hours to learning the intricacies of the cars he worked on. He became adept at diagnosing issues and making repairs, ensuring each car ran smoothly and efficiently. Once he felt confident that his cars were running well, he would shift his attention to the aesthetics.
Whether it involves customizing paint jobs, adding unique features, or optimizing the interior design, Mario values the importance of creating functional cars that look striking and reflect his personal style.

Becoming a member
In 2018, Mario was introduced to the Quad City British Auto Club by his friend John Weber. He entered the red MG in the Autofest as a project car with many issues that needed attention. Mario met club members who shared his interest in working on vehicles and resolving mechanical and electrical issues.

Contribution & Growth
These days, you can find Mario at club events, where he enjoys helping members with their cars. He particularly loves the challenge of bringing vehicles back to life, especially those that have been off the road for many years. For instance, he has worked on an MG Magnette that hadn't run for 14 years, an MG Midget that had been out of commission for 26 years, and a Mini Cooper that hadn't run for 34 years.

Helping others is another reason to drive his iconic MG all over the Quad Cities and beyond. One of Mario's favorite aspects of car ownership is interaction with people. Whether at Home Depot or the grocery store, Mario's MG always attracts attention and thumbs up from admirers. He enjoys the challenge of troubleshooting issues and keeping his cars in top condition. For Mario, the journey is just as important as the destination.

Looking ahead, Mario is excited about expanding the club's activities and fostering connections with other car clubs. He believes in the value of collaboration and community, and his vision for the QCBAC includes more tech times, charity partnerships, and group participation in car shows.

Mario's story is a testament to the joy and fulfillment of pursuing one's passions. His love for cars and his dedication to the car club make him a valuable community member. We are grateful for his contributions and always look forward to experiencing Mario's enthusiastic personality and passion for cars.
